Please note that, as this is a one-stop clinic, the operation will be carried out on the same day. If you would prefer to have a consultation with Dr Navamani first, before deciding whether you would like to go ahead with the operation at a later date, please advise us at the time of booking your appointment.

Our Vasectomy Fees

The cost of the procedure, which includes the initial consultation, all materials including anaesthetic and dressings and the follow up semen analysis, is £325.

Commonly-Asked Questions

What do I do on the day of operation?

Wear a snug fitting under wear to support the scrotum.

Please bring a dressing gown.

You don’t need to starve because the operation is carried out under local anaesthetic. You can have a light meal.

Bring your favourite CD with you, and we will play it in the operating theatre during your procedure, or you MP3 player. We want you to feel as relaxed as possible.

If you are travelling by car, parking is available at the side of the hospital (Braithwaite suite).

Please arrive in time for your appointment and report to the main reception. Our co-ordinator will greet you, check the registration details and give you the initial counselling.

Then you will see Dr Sterlin Navamani for further counselling and to sign a consent form for operation.

On rare occasions, the examination will reveal that the operation is not possible under local anaesthesia in which case we will advise you to have the vasectomy on a later date under general anaesthesia.

After counselling you will be taken to the theatre.

The operation will take about 15 to 20 minutes. We will keep you fully informed at all times.

Once the vasectomy has been completed, you will change back in to your clothes and will be transferred to a recovery area.

Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee/tea with biscuits. Your spouse/partner can join you at this point.

Our vasectomy co-ordinator will provide you with a specimen jar and a form for the semen analysis.

We will also ask you to complete a questionnaire relating to the service you have received.

The contact details for Dr Navamani will be given to you in case you need them, in the unlikely event of you experiencing any problems in the first few hours after the operation.

Once you are happy that you are well enough to leave, you will be discharged.

Can I drive?

We would advise your spouse/partner/colleague to drive you home.

After the operation:

By the time you get home the anaesthetic will be wearing off and you may experience mild ache or pain possibly worse on one side. This is a normal reaction after the operation and you can take pain killers like paracetamol.

Allow 24 hours for the wound to seal before having a shower, and avoid having a bath for 2 days. It is advisable to avoid alcohol on the day of operation.

If you have any concern after the vasectomy you can contact Dr Navamani or your GP.

The next day you should feel quite well and be able to engage in some light domestic duties although you may continue to experience some discomfort.

After 2 days you may notice some discolouration of scrotum due to bruising. This is normal and gets better in a week.

If you notice any increasing swelling or pain, you need to contact Dr Navamani or your GP.

When can I go back to work?

If your job is non-manual and involves light duties you can return to work within a day or two.  If it is a heavy manual work, it is better to wait for a week.

The decision as to when you return to work is yours, essentially whenever you feel ready to do so.

When can I resume sex?

Usually within 7-10 days to allow for the soft tissue to heal and for you and your partner to feel comfortable.

Can I stop using other contraception?

Not yet.

It will take time to clear the sperm from rest of the vas. It may take up to 20 or more ejaculations to clear the sperm.

Until we receive two specimens showing that there is no presence of sperm in the sample, you will not be able to stop using other forms of contraception.

When do I send my semen sample?

Please collect the semen sample in the specimen jar directly by masturbation on the due date. Do not use a condom.

Complete the form with your details, address, and date of birth, date and time of when the specimen was taken. Securely close the lid, place it in the envelope provided, and post it immediately, first thing on Monday morning so that it can reach the laboratory the next day.

What happens if I don’t submit the requested specimen?

If you fail to submit the requisite number of semen specimens for analysis by the laboratory, we will not be able to confirm your sterility and you will therefore need to rely on an alternative form of contraception.

Patient’s survey

We like to know, what our patients think of the service we are providing, in order that we can continue to improve the service.

To this end, we ask our patients to complete a questionnaire before being discharged. We also ask the patients to complete a further questionnaire three months after the operation.
